The 6 Best Quit Smoking Apps in 2026
Prices and features checked on
There's no single best quit smoking app. The government apps are free, with no upsells. Smoke Free has the most published research of the apps here. QuitNow is built around its community. Kwit turns quitting into a game. Quit It is built on motivation and positive reinforcement.
We make Quit It. We installed every app here on an Android phone in October 2026 and tried the free version, then checked the store listings, help pages and published research.
Key takeaways
- The free government apps, NHS Quit SmokingNHS (UK) and quitSTARTSmokefree.gov (US), have no upsells.
- Apps built on proven psychological approaches help more people quit than basic advice apps,BMJ so what's inside matters more than price.
How We Compared Them

The 6 Apps in Detail
NHS Quit Smoking
Best for: A free, straightforward way to quit smoking in the UK.
Developed by Department of Health and Social Care.
When we tried it: There are lots of options and plenty of free tips, milestones and challenges, with no ads and no account required. The interface can be confusing, though. After the first onboarding, a second round of questions follows, including your quit date, along with tutorials and pop-ups throughout the app.

- Quit plans: A structured 28-day programme.
- Price: Completely free, with no in-app purchases.
- Craving tools: Weekly guides, missions and daily tips.
- Support: Stories from other quitters, but no live chat.
- Evidence: No published trials of the app found.
- Limitations: Built around one 28-day programme, with no documented cut-down option.
- What users say: Users like tracking their progress, savings and badges. Some report setup crashes on Android and limited flexibility for cutting down.
quitSTART
Best for: Free quit-smoking support in the US.
Developed by Smokefree.gov at the US National Cancer Institute.
When we tried it: There's plenty of genuinely useful information and practical advice, all free, with no ads or account required. If you haven't quit yet, the app suggests setting a quit date within the next 14 days and helps you prepare with tips on managing triggers, cutting down and other practical steps. It also builds a personal Quit Kit based on your answers. The design feels dated, though, making it harder to navigate and stay engaged.

- Quit plans: Set a future quit date or enter one that's already passed. If you're preparing to quit, the app suggests a date within 14 days and offers practical tips and a personal Quit Kit.
- Price: Completely free, with no ads or in-app purchases.
- Craving tools: Distraction games, challenges, tips, check-ins and alerts for trigger times or places.
- Support: No in-app community or coaching.
- Evidence: No published trials measuring quit rates found.
- Limitations: Dated design and limited flexibility in tracking savings.
- What users say: Users appreciate the craving tips, check-ins and supportive approach to slips. Some report problems with savings calculations and quit-date tracking.
Smoke Free
Best for: A quit-smoking app backed by published research.
Developed by 23 Ltd.
When we tried it: There's plenty of useful advice, along with features like daily missions, challenges and a diary for journaling. The design feels dated, though. Creating an account initially seemed optional, but we had to sign up to continue in the UK. You can set a future quit date, but until then the stats stay at zero and the content doesn't adapt to help you prepare. There's also a leaderboard, which may not appeal to everyone.

- Quit plans: Quit now or change your quit date later. No documented cut-down plan.
- Price: Free progress tracking, health milestones, savings and craving tools. Paid options start at $0.99 and Pro at $6.99, with purchases up to $209.99 on iOS. Google Play lists the Android app as containing ads.
- Craving tools: Craving tips and tracking. Paid plans add daily missions and an AI coach.
- Support: Chat available on paid plans.
- Evidence: One study found higher self-reported quit rates with daily missions, but follow-up was low. A later real-world trial found that offering the app didn't raise quit rates at six months, though people who downloaded it quit more often.
- Limitations: Paid features are split across a Pro subscription, a one-off Blitz plan and monthly advisor access. Research findings are mixed.
- What users say: Users enjoy tracking milestones, daily missions and community support. Some report sign-up problems, limited vaping support and useful features locked behind paid plans.
QuitNow
Best for: Quitting with support from a large community.
Developed by Fewlaps.
When we tried it: The design is polished, and you can get started without an account, although community chat requires one. Milestones are a big part of the experience, but the free version has frequent ads and most features beyond progress tracking require PRO. You can choose to cut down rather than quit outright, but we didn't notice the app adapting to that choice. We also couldn't find a way to record a slip or keep a journal.

- Quit plans: Quit now, set a future quit date or track a past quit. You can also select cutting down, but there's no structured reduction plan.
- Price: Free with ads, including progress tracking, some milestones and community chat (with an account). PRO in-app purchases range from $2.99 to $34.99 on iOS, with billing periods unclear from the store listing.
- Craving tools: QuitNow AI and a quitting course with PRO.
- Support: Community chat and monthly expert sessions.
- Evidence: No published trials measuring quit rates found.
- Limitations: Frequent ads and PRO prompts, with many features locked behind a subscription.
- What users say: Users appreciate the progress stats, supportive community and simple design. Some report frequent upgrade prompts, difficulty recording slips and billing issues.
Kwit
Best for: A game-like approach to quitting smoking.
Developed by Kwit SAS.
When we tried it: The app has a polished, playful design with friendly mascots, plenty of content and useful exercises. However, onboarding takes time and requires an account. On the upgrade screen, the skip button is easy to miss, and paid offers appear frequently, including a countdown on the home screen. Many features require Premium, and some exercises feel lengthy. There's a preparation plan but no structured cut-down option. Follow-up emails share the founder's personal quit story.

- Quit plans: Quit now, track a past quit or prepare with a 9-step programme. Cut-down tracking covers vaping and nicotine replacement with Premium, not cigarettes.
- Price: Free without ads, with basic tracking and tools. Premium starts at $6.49/week, with monthly, yearly and lifetime options.
- Craving tools: Breathing exercises, mini-games, motivation cards and a craving diary.
- Support: A community forum, plus group chats with Premium on iOS.
- Evidence: No randomised trials found. Kwit has published its own usage studies.
- Limitations: Needs an account with an email address, and 6 of the 9 preparation steps need Premium.
- What users say: Users enjoy the game-like motivation, widgets and lifetime purchase option. Some report restrictive paywalls, frequent prompts to buy Premium and concerns about trial renewals.
Quit It
Best for: Quitting at your own pace, with encouragement along the way.
Developed by Antonis Evmorfopoulos Limited (us).
Inside the app: We built Quit It to help people recognise their smoking triggers, understand the thoughts and feelings behind cravings, and develop healthier ways to respond. Journaling, daily check-ins and practical craving exercises encourage reflection and small changes over time. Flexible quit plans and positive reinforcement help people build confidence, learn from setbacks and keep making progress.

- Quit plans: Start when you're ready, cut down first or quit outright. Your plan can change as you go, without losing sight of your progress.
- Price: Free without ads or an account, including quit plans, tracking, craving tools, journaling, milestones and a goal. Premium costs $2.99/month or $19.99/year, both with a 7-day trial, or $39.99 lifetime.
- Craving tools: Practical exercises and games to help you through urges. Premium adds guided breathing and craving insights.
- Support: Encouraging messages through your day that ease off as your cravings do, plus milestones and celebrations that show how far you've come. No community or coaching.
- Evidence: No published trials measuring quit rates yet.
- Limitations: Newer app with limited user feedback. No community, coaching or vaping support.
- What users say: Not enough reviews yet to identify consistent feedback.
